How Sensio Customers Are Using Data as Decision Support in Care Homes
Our new award-winning solution, Sensio Insight, was officially launched in all markets in March 2025. Sensio Insight uses sensor data to provide decision support to care teams, and by visualising hidden patterns and changes in behaviour it allows for faster and more person-centred care.

Sensio Insight – developed in collaboration with care teams

Sensio Insight has been developed in close collaboration with a handful of customers. From initial interviews to piloting the solution, Sensio Insight has been shaped by the needs and feedback from care teams around Europe.

In an international webinar, two of our pilot customers shared their experiences of using Sensio Insight in their care homes. Both Lillestrøm Municipality in Norway and Eastcote Park care home in the UK have been using the solution for a while and shared some interesting examples of how they have been able to use the data to provide more person-centred care.

From overcoming scepticism to using data to map the success of new medication

Implementing a new tool and way of working can be a challenge in any workplace, and Jens Moens, a section leader at Skedsmotun care home in Lillestrøm, shared that they had experienced some hesitation from the care teams when first introducing the new solution.

They solved this by having their “super users” from each department learn about the solution directly from Sensio. They then took it back to their departments and started using Sensio Insight in ways that suited their care teams. Some used it as part of the morning briefing; some decided to use Sensio Insight as a support function during medical visits with the doctor; and some decided that the super users would be in charge of reading the data and communicating that to the team.

– We believe that using a flexible approach to the implementation of Sensio Insight enabled each department to tailor the use of Sensio Insight to their specific needs. It also empowered our super users by giving them ownership of the product’s utilisation, explains Jens Moens, discussing how they overcame scepticism among care teams and started seeing Sensio Insight as a tool their teams wanted to use.

Lillestrøm Municipality also shared an example of how they have used the data in Sensio Insight to follow up a resident in collaboration with the doctor. They were experiencing that a resident was acting aggressively and feeling insecure during the day, and the care team discovered that the resident was awake a lot of the night. The patient was started on sleeping medication, and together with the doctor they were able to map the effects in Sensio Insight. They saw a clear positive impact and increased sleep, which in turn contributed to less aggression during the day.

– The resident started on sleeping pills and when we were going to map the effect, it was natural to continue using Insight. The doctor was given her own access to be able to see the report for herself. We saw a clear change in the sleep patterns for the resident and the positive effects of the sleeping pills. It also turned out to have a positive effect on the resident’s mood, with less aggression during the day, says Hilde Mari Fjellvik, Specialist and Quality nurse at Åråsveien care home in Lillestrøm Municipality.

Early Detection of Health Issues leads to more safety

We were also joined by Ben Dalgetty, who is the Support Services Manager for Eastcote Park Care Home in the UK. In recent months, Ben has been working closely with the home’s care services manager to look at the data coming in from Sensio Insight, following the successful implementation of the Sensio system at Eastcote Park. In the webinar, he shares that it is mainly himself and the deputy care service manager who look at the data and then bring the information to the care team.

– We look to the data to see if everything is as it should be and, if it’s not, why? What we then do is invite the team leaders and senior carers in to understand the information that we’ve pulled out of the Insight system, and we help them to deliver that at our morning handovers. For example, if there is a resident who’s shown unusual activity the night before, we’ll talk about that during the handover in the day so the day staff are aware of any potential issues or potential resolutions for that activity, says Ben.

Ben explains that Sensio Insight has been valuable for pinpointing any changes in activity. He shares an example where they used the data in Sensio Insight to discover the early signs of a UTI. This resident was often in the common areas and easy to observe during the day, but when they looked at her night-time activity in Sensio Insight, they discovered that she had increased her bathroom visits during the night from about four or five times to twelve and even a spike of twenty-three bathroom visits. They contacted her doctor and were able to quickly administer a test and discover a UTI. She was put on antibiotics, and they could then see the decrease in bathroom visits at night in Sensio Insight.

– For me, it’s great that we were able to identify that UTI early. But more than that, this lady has mobility issues, she’s living with dementia, and that UTI could have caused a delirium, it could have caused an increase in falls, and it could have made her very vulnerable if we hadn’t spotted it as early as we did. And I’m not sure that, without the insights, we’d have been as quick. Yes, we’d have spotted it, but I’m not sure we would have spotted it as early. So therefore, in my opinion, we’ve made that resident much safer for that period, Ben explains in the webinar.

A tip for care homes considering Sensio Insight

As Sensio's CEO, Torbjorn Aamodt, pointed out at the start of the webinar, the care sector is changing due to the demographic shifts we see not only across Europe, but across the world. The way we work must evolve and hearing how these pilot care homes are embracing new technology, care technology and data to help their care teams manage the workload more efficiently while providing more person-centred care is inspiring. When asked if he has any tips for other care homes considering using Sensio Insight, Ben points out:

– Whatever care planning system you use in your organisations, it’s not always real-time, and Insight is exactly that. It’s real-time data. It allows you to analyse things as you go along and as you deliver care, and it allows you to ensure that the care you’re delivering is spot on for that resident.

Both Lillestrøm Municipality and Eastcote Park care home have confirmed that they will continue using Sensio Insight, and we are excited to maintain the partnership. If you would like to see the full webinar, you can watch it on-demand here.
