RoomMate
RoomMate is a revolutionary multi-sensor designed to meet the needs of dementia and elderly care. The sensor is always on, reducing and detecting falls using advanced algorithms. RoomMate has proven to provide significant benefits, both for care teams and residents, compared to traditional nurse call systems.

Fewer falls and injuries
Falls are the most common type of accident among elderly and can have major physical, psychological and social consequences. Falls are also often the start of a rapidly downward spiral. Preventing falls increases the joy of life and longevity, while making elderly care more sustainable.
Less stress and lower sickness absence
Care teams in the elderly care sector are noticing that pressure and stress are increasing. RoomMate provides a better overview of residents and better priorities, which gives employees better workdays and more energy.
Better sleep with less physical supervision
Physical supervision at night often wakes the resident, which results in poorer sleep quality. RoomMate eliminates the need for unnecessary supervision at night and gives the resident better sleep, quality of life and enjoyment of life. This is precisely why RoomMate by many is called «the night shift’s best friend».
More time for physical care
With RoomMate, care teams always have an overview of which residents need help – and which do not. This frees up care capacity and gives them more time to care for those who need it most.

Anonymised, digital supervision
Digital supervision provides the ability to see (image/video) and speak with the resident via a screen (mobile, tablet, PC) to quickly assess whether physical supervision is needed.

Automatic notifications

Activity overview
Activity data, including through Sensio Insight, gives care teams unique decision support to provide residents with individualised follow-up and treatment. This increases quality and patient safety and provides a safer everyday life for residents.

Frequently asked questions about RoomMate
What is RoomMate?
RoomMate is a revolutionary multi-sensor developed to meet the needs of dementia and elderly care. The sensor is always on alert, reducing and detecting falls using advanced algorithms. It can send anonymised images of the situation in the room, so that care teams can carry out digital and anonymous supervision without disturbing the residents or making unnecessary intrusions into privacy. RoomMate is a so-called passive sensor that automatically warns of falls and other potentially dangerous events without the residents having to wear equipment on their body or trigger an alarm themselves. RoomMate is proven technology with 25,000 sensors in use in Norway, Sweden, Denmark and the UK, as well as test pilots in Germany and France. Sensio has very good references from the use of RoomMate in care homes and home care.
What is the user group for RoomMate?
RoomMate is primarily used in care homes and assisted living facilities, but also in private homes, homes for the mentally disabled and hospitals.
Which alerts and alarms can RoomMate trigger?
RoomMate can warn about these incidents:
- Falls – if a person falls in the room the sensor will pick that up without any need for wearables.
- Sits up in bed – gives an alert if a person prone to falls sits up during the night. This means that care teams can get to the resident before they leave the bed.
- Leaving the bed – if the resident leaves the bed.
- Leaving the chair – if the resident leaves the chair.
- Activity – general activity in the room.
- Person enters the room – if someone enters the room, perhaps at a time when that’s not supposed to happen.
- Person leaves the room – be alerted when someone leaves the room and might cause harm to themselves or others.
- High volume – residents crying out for help can be heard by the sensor.
- Movement in bed – if the resident doesn’t move for a certain time it can mean that they might need help, for instance, to reduce pressure ulcers, and the other way, if they do move sufficiently themselves, they might not need help turning.
How does RoomMate handle visual and/or audible supervision?
The RoomMate sensor provides several options for care teams in a care situation. If there is an alarm or warning, you will receive an anonymised image of the room, so that it can be assessed whether the incident is of a serious nature and requires action. Care teams can also use the app's audio functions to either contact the resident or listen into the room to assess the severity of the incident. In addition, two-way speech can also be set to speak to the resident. Listening can also be done anonymously, so that you cannot hear what is being said, but assess the situation based on voice volume and intensity. When the cause of the alarm has been clarified, the notification is acknowledged, and notes can also be made directly in the medical record system from the RoomMate or Sensio Pocket app.
What are the privacy features of RoomMate?
These are some of the privacy features of RoomMate:
- Infrared 3D/laser sensor, no camera.
- Anonymised visual and audio assistance.
- Shadow-like visual representation.
- Cannot directly or indirectly identify person.
- Anonymised audio supervision available.
- Anonymisation takes place in the sensor itself.
- No visualisation or audio data from the room is stored.
- All events and supervisions are logged.
- Encryption of data.
- Home users can deactivate service on-demand for additional privacy.
What does the RoomMate need to work?
RoomMate only needs power and internet access to work. It is a complete system that has everything included. Administration and alarm handling is done via computer, tablet or mobile phone.
